    The Language of the Body

All children are mimics, this is how they learn social skills and communication form the day they are born. This first language is learnt before they become proficient in verbal skills, and what we call today non-verbal communication or body language.

In Laurens van der Post's book "Jung and the Story of our Time", he describes a process that Carl Jung went through when dealing with people who had not uttered a word for years. He would watch them closely, and when he saw some frowning or other expression appear on their faces, or even just an unwarranted gesture accomplished with their hands, he would repeat as best he could the expression and gesture himself, trying to think at the same time of the first thing his act of imitation brought to mind. He would then put it in words to the patient and was amazed at how often he would thereby establish contact.

Desmond Morris has observed many parallels in body language between animals and humans and has written fascinating accounts of these observations to which I will refer from time to time. They allow much insight into the realm of unconscious thought which culminates in a sub-conscious action of the body, sometimes miniscule, but to a trained eye able to be observed. Often our sub-conscious mind will be far more in touch with what is actually happening. We call this intuition, and with this we often make "judgements" or decisions, without consciously knowing why we have done so.

I use this important and fascinating subject matter to empower people working in the business sector. People can become aware of their own and others real intentions, learning to read and communicate openly and honestly as well as with more accuracy with their colleagues, clients and opposition.
