Marks Maponyane

South African Soccer Hero
Marks Mafa Maponyane was born in Meadowlands, Soweto. He attended high school at Kelekitso where he matriculated.

In 1981 he joined Kaizer Chiefs where he started his professional career. He also played for Dynamos, Orlando Pirates and Wits University where he ended his career in 1998.

During his professional career he was crowned the South African Footballer of the Year in 1983, 1987, and 1994. In 1983 he was voted South African Sports Hero of the Year. Maponyane had trials overseas with Victoria Setubal of Portugal and Grasshopper Zurich of Switzerland. He played for Bafana Bafana from 1992 to 1995.

Currently he is freelance commentator/presenter for soccer programs on S.A.B.C., where he was voted Most Promising Live Television Presenter in 1997 and 1999 in he was a finalist in the Live Sport Television Commentary category.

He has been a motivational speaker since 1990.
