Summary ProfileJulio Garcia’s radio career started as far back as 1998, where he began life behind the mic as a sports presenter on community radio station “The Voice Fm”. From there he graduated to hosting his own show in the morning drive slot at another community radio station, Horizon Stereo.
After hosting a very successful breakfast show for nearly three years, it was only a matter of time before Julio moved up to the world of commercial radio. 94.7 Highveld stereo, Jo’burg’s biggest regional radio station conducted a talent search. Julio showed immense potential and beat over 10 000 other contestants to claim a spot on the 94.7 team.
He was then given two time slots: Saturday and Sunday, 18h00 – 22h00, Saturdays were a “get you in the mood to party” show, and Sundays was the “Homebru” show, a show dedicated to showcasing local talent. The enormous success of the Homebru show saw Julio becoming an icon of sorts in the local music industry, where he became a much in demand emcee for all of South Africa’s major music launches, as well as televised, countrywide tours with South Africa’s top bands.
After the tremendous success of both shows Julio soon became the favourite stand-in jock at 94.7, doing every show, from the breakfast show, to the afternoon drive. He also capitalized on the huge popularity of his Homebru show by joining forces with 94.7 to release a compilation CD of world famous songs, covered by South African bands, which went on to sell over 10 000 copies and can still be found on the shelves of most music stores.
In 2005 Julio caught the eye of the producers of various entertainment shows on DSTV where he seamlessly made the transition from radio to television. He continues to host various shows to this day.
Many have applauded Julio for putting SA music on the map, and although he resigned from 94.7 in 2008, he can still be seen on various TV shows, emceeing functions, as well as doing voice overs and producing music.
