ARTHUR GILLIS is group managing director of Protea Hotels, a hotel owning, management and marketing company. Protea started operating in 1984 with four hotels. Today it is the largest hotel group in Africa and the 21st largest in the world, with 120 hotels and resorts in nine African countries, three hotels in London and one in Russia. Protea won the hotel category in the Markinor/Sunday Times Top Brands Awards in 2004 and 2005, and was voted Best Hotel Brand in Africa at the 2005 World Travel Awards. Arthur is South African and a graduate of the Johannesburg Hotel School. He has been with Protea since the company started and it took him only four years to reach his current position of group managing director. He has studied at Cornell University on several occasions and completed their first Advanced Management Programme.
