Higher growth beckons after the 2019 elections
An informed keynote address by Dr Roelof Botha

Mr Cyril Ramaphosa’s ascension to the presidency of the country has fostered a new-found spirit of optimism, as initially reflected in a stronger currency, higher values for our sovereign bonds, a more sensible approach towards energy policy and the retention of investment grade status for public debt by Moody’s. It remains likely that the issue of land reform will be settled in favour of pragmatism and the upholding of the principle of private property rights. Once this lingering uncertainty has been removed and the elections are over, South Africa’s new President can begin the daunting task of securing higher growth and employment creation in earnest.

As a previous winner of the Finmedia Economist of the Year Award and with more than 40 years of experience, Dr Roelof Botha is exceptionally well-qualified to advise executives and managers on prospects for higher economic growth in 2019, which could pave the way for stellar economic expansion in 2020.

The discussion will include the following topical issues:
ï‚· An index of the financial resilience of households
ï‚· The results of an economic impact assessment of land expropriation without compensation (based on seven country case studies)
ï‚· Growth drivers starting to emerge
ï‚· What to expect from the 2019 Budget
ï‚· Patience required en route to the elections
ï‚· Structural improvement in growth prospects for SADC countries

His past experience includes: Economic policy advisor at National Treasury; financial editor of a daily newspaper; economics lecturer at several Universities; and chief economist of the SA Federated Chamber of Industries. He teaches Applied Economics at GIBS (part-time), is a columnist for Netwerk24, Beeld, Afgriland and the Agri Wes-Cape Bulletin, is Economic Advisor to the Optimum Financial Services Group and has authored more than 500 research papers and articles

He accurately predicted the retention of investment grade for South Africa’s sovereign bonds by Moody’s (both in November 2017 and March 2018), as well as the repeated recovery of the rand since early 2016, based on a thorough analysis of indicators confirming fundamental fiscal and monetary stability in SA.

*********************************************
Over the past two decades, Dr Botha has delivered more than 300 presentations at seminars, conferences and management briefings. Many of these presentations have covered overviews and forecasts of key economic indicators such as GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, globalization and the rise of the emerging markets. In his own unique style of blending the serious matters of economics and politics with the lighter side of life, Dr Botha has managed to captivate audiences around the country. Most of his presentations are regarded as broadly motivational, in terms of highlighting research that confirms numerous positive structural changes in the South African economy, including an objective reflection on the prospects for sustained development and socio-economic stability in the Southern African region.
