Carl Bates, Chief Executive of the Sirdar South Africa Group, is a leading international entrepreneur, speaker, mentor and published author. He is passionate about rapidly growing small to medium businesses and empowering communities through sustainable enterprise. A member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors since 2003, Carl is a recognised leader in enterprise governance. Through his range of involvements in business, politics and the non-profit sector, Carl has a variety of insights into strategic planning and organisational growth from a governance perspective.
At the age of 18, Carl was appointed as a director of the Brightwater Centre, a specialised aged-care facility in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Two years later he was appointed as a director of the Arena Manawatu, New Zealand’s largest multi-stadia complex, also becoming chairman of the finance and audit committee. He has been a council member of the Universal College of Learning (UCOL) and a director of various other private companies.
As a director of several of Sirdar’s clients’ companies, Carl is continually involved in the governance of small and medium enterprises while simultaneously leading the Sirdar organisation. Carl is currently a director of a number of private companies from the manufacturing and service industries.
Today, Carl is the managing director of the Sirdar Global Group. He is currently based in South Africa where he leads Sirdar Global’s South African subsidiary, as the Group Chief Executive.
Previously Carl held the role of Acting Chief Executive of Quality Health New Zealand, the country’s leading provider of standards setting, performance assessment and recognition of achievement in health and disability services. Carl led Quality Health New Zealand through a dramatic turnaround, positioning it strongly for the future.
Carl is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and graduated with a Bachelor Business Studies First Class Honours Degree (Accountancy) and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Finance) from Massey University. He was also named a Massey Alumni and a Freemason Scholar and was awarded the Allan Gibson and NZICA (Wanganui Branch) Scholarship’s.
In his spare time, Carl is a fanatic traveler, having traveled extensively both nationally and internationally (including having climbed Kilimanjaro). A particular aspect he enjoys is experiencing different cuisine to inspire his love of cooking.
